Grading Week: FAQ

With the start of Grading Week officially here, here are some Frequently Asked Questions we get from parents who are new to Gradings.
IS IT FOR EVERYONE?
No. Higher belts have a broader Syllabus which will take more lessons to cover. For students in our Kicking Dragons Program, or lower belts in our Taekwondo Programs, they will have the opportunity to grade if they have participated from earlier this Term. For students who have joined later this Term, you may have the opportunity to Grade in Week 10 – or early in Term 2 – to give us additional time to cover the Syllabus.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS ELIGIBLE?
Eligible students will receive their Grading notice from this week. A yellow piece of paper with the Grading information listed. We would never ask a student to move to the next level if they’re not ready.

IS MY CHILD READY?
If your child receives a Grading notice, it means the instructor team has identified them as someone ready for the next challenges. Improvements – whether it be small or large – will come. Each child will develop at their own pace, it’s our job to help nurture this growth and improvement.

WHAT IS THE SYLLABUS?
Taekwondo has a wide range of skills to master. At each belt level we have a Syllabus that students learn. The Syllabus could be broken into 3 categories:

  1. Set forms/movements that need to be memorised
  2. Skill based movements involving defending, striking, and countering
  3. Fitness components
As students progress to higher levels, there will be more content in each of these 3 categories. Our goal is to build your childs’ confidence and skill, and to set them up for success. This is why we break down the content into smaller teachable components that make it easier for students to perfect.

IS THE GRADING COMPULSORY:
We recommend students participate in the Grading when the time comes. It’s a great reward and motivator for many students.

In our many years of working with kids, we notice that students who progress through the belt system:

  • Are more motivated to come to class.
  • See their skills constantly improving.
  • Are being mentally and physically challenged which keeps them engaged.
Earning their new belt is a symbol of hard work. It is a tangible representation of their commitment, effort and attitude in class, something that should be celebrated and rewarded. Something that they can earn.
We look forward to seeing everyone level up and progress to their new belt levels.
