The Benefits of Martial Arts: Adults

Unfortunately the common thought for most people is that Martial Arts is just for kids. Kids do Martial Arts, adults go to the gym! Read below to see how our Adult programs can help YOU (the adult, the parent, the person with “no time”) achieve your goals – as we discuss our Adult programs we will be considering programs such as Taekwondo, Muay Thai, Kenpo, our Fitness based programs JAI Fit and Muay Thai Fit, and Private Lessons.

In most instances, Adults that begin training with us have never done Martial Arts before (some may have done it when they were kids). What lures them to us could be the convenience of the programs, being inspired by seeing their kids train, or perhaps they’re sick of the gym scene and they’re after something different. Adults are restricted in many ways, whether it be their lack of time, lack of money, or their work/home life balance. Despite these trends, we’re beginning to see more and more adults step foot on the mats as they look to invest some time into themselves.

Our Adult programs would be working on developing and improving the following developmental milestones:

  1. Martial Art Technique: If you enrol in one of our group classes or private classes, you will be learning Martial Arts from someone who has dedicated their life to Martial Arts. Just like a Doctor studies and immerses themselves in their field, so too does the Martial Art instructor study and immerse themselves. Both Grandmaster Joe and Master Chris are full time Martial Arts instructors, you can be assured you will be well looked after.
  2. Fitness and Flexibility: Classes are physically engaging. Yes you will learn Martial Arts and Self Defence, but you will also improve your Fitness and Flexibility. Moving the body through a range of striking, defending and bodyweight exercises will all assist in improving your overall health and wellness.
  3. Muscle Tone: You’ve got muscles…Yes its true! Our classes will get you sweating, burning calories and improving your muscle tone.
  4. Strength and Muscular Endurance: For many, work forces you to spend most of your time sitting at a desk or driving long distances in a car. Martial Art classes will ensure you are active and moving while on your feet. Repetitive striking will help improve your muscular endurance both in your upper body and legs, and the activity of Fitness and Martial Arts will help combat the slouched over body position that comes with an office job.
  5. Weight Loss: Exercise and movement will assist in weight loss, but that’s only one part of losing weight. With your renewed energy and involvement in exercise, you’ll soon discover that your new passion for Martial Arts will expand to your diet. You’ll be more conscious of the foods and drinks you put into your body as your mindset begins to change.
  6. Core Strength: Apart from direct exercises and movement patterns that help to target the mid section, many of the Martial Art movements will include your core. Whether it is for striking, kicking, moving or defending, you’ll find that your core strength will improve. Core strength is important for everyday functioning and can help assist in the prevention of back pain, things such as bending down to tie your shoes, picking up and moving shopping bags, and posture correction all require a degree of core strength.
  7. Confidence: Martial Arts gives you the confidence knowing that you can defend yourself if the situation arises. Our classes will give you the knowledge in how to strike and defend, as well as the knowledge in reading and understanding situations and conflict. In addition to this, losing weight and building lean muscle will give you the added confidence of knowing you’re healthy inside and out. When you’re looking healthier than your friends you know you’re on to a winner!
  8. Energy Booster and Disease Prevention: While it might not feel that way at the time, exercise and movement boosts your energy. Regular physical activity improves your muscle strength and boosts your endurance. Exercising delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and helps your body work more efficiently. The added benefit of a healthy heart and functioning body is that you are better able to ward off health related illness such as diabetes, depression, stroke and more.
  9. Stress Release: Being physically active is a great way to reduce stress. It provides you an opportunity to ‘zone out’ as you sweat your way through a workout. Once the class is over your body will be filled with the feel good hormones known as endorphins. These hormones will assist in stress release and an improved sleep.
  10. Teamwork: Our group classes are interactive, fun and addictive. By participating you’ll be a part of a great team of instructors and students who are all on the mats for the same purpose – to learn new skills, make new friends, have fun while working out, and to feel young again!

While we have included a top 10 Benefits for Adults, the truth is that list could easily reach 50 Benefits and beyond. Martial Arts, Exercise and Movement is a contributing factor to a healthy lifestyle – but don’t forget your diet. An often overlooked component to a healthy lifestyle is the nutrition (or lack thereof) that we put into our body. Stay tuned for more information about food and nutrition.
