BLOG – Female Participation in Martial Arts

Recently on our Instagram page, we looked at the common misconception that Martial Arts is for boys. We highlighted the female participation rate in our Teens Taekwondo Program, as well as our Adult Muay Thai programs:

TEENS TAEKWONDO:

Between school, study, work and a social life, participation in our Teens Taekwondo Program tends to fluctuate. Over the years however, we have seen a larger increase in female participation in our Teens Taekwondo program. We’ve seen a shifting attitude from the girls who were once participating in netball, dance and gymnastics, and are now eager to try something new.

We’ve also seen a shifting attitude in parents who are encouraging their daughters to participate in Martial Arts. Aside from the Self Defence component, parents have encouraged their daughters to take up activities outside of their network of friends. Surrounding themselves with a new community of friends, and learning a skill in a supportive, team friendly environment.

Currently, our total female participation rate in our Teens Taekwondo program is sitting at over 30%. In our Beginners and Intermediate program alone, this number is just over 50%.

ADULT MUAY THAI PROGRAMS:

For many female adults, activities such as yoga and pilates, gym workouts and social sport tends to dominate. Recently, we have seen a large shift in female adults participating in our Muay Thai Programs.

Across our group Muay Thai Classes, Muay Thai Fitness, and Private Classes, female participation is sitting at over 40%. Learning a Self Defence skill, improving heart health and muscle tone, and training in a family friendly centre have made many of our clients looking forward to their weekly training sessions. Friendships have formed on and off the mats with some even having their weekly breakfast/dinner catch ups after classes.

At JAI Martial Arts, we are proud to offer programs to students of all ages (we start them as young as 2). Our Junior programs have many young girls training, and we have amazing female instructors who serve as positive role models – these instructors were also students in our junior programs when they were younger. We pride ourselves in creating a space that families can train in, one that you would be happy to send your kids to because you know they will be looked after. Our Martial Arts school is a place where the owners are always present, giving you peace of mind that you and your family will be looked after.
