BE AWARE – It’s still dark
Being AWARE is more important than learning how to block or get out of grabs. By not putting yourself into a dangerous situation, the risk of you being possibly attacked is significantly reduced.
With winter here, we’re getting less sunlight. So for all those people who need to get their training in before/after the sun, here are 3 SAFETY TIPS from @chris.ingrati :
1️⃣ Is the shortcut worth it?
Cutting through the park or taking the dark lane way might cut your travel time, but if you can’t see what’s around you then you’re putting yourself in a potentially bad situation.
Always opt to travel in an area with lighting. Not only can you scan your surroundings, but you’ll also avoid tripping on rocks or uneven surfaces.
2️⃣ Walk on the road
Unless it’s a busy road, walk towards oncoming traffic. Walkways on the side of the road can at times be limited with light. You won’t know if anyone is hiding behind trees or brickwork – and you’ll avoid spider webs too.
The road tends to be well lit from the street lights. You’ll be able to spot your shadow – you’ll also spot the shadow of anyone moving behind you too.
3️⃣ Hands free and aware
It’s tempting to hold your phone, and it’s tempting to drown the walk/run with music. When it’s dark, you’ll want to be aware and you’ll want your hands free.
Holding a phone makes you a target, it also distracts you from the attention you should be giving to your surroundings – same as wearing headphones (save these for when the area becomes well lit, or the area becomes more populated).
Stay safe and be aware
