Celebrating 38 years

April 17 1984 is when it all started.

Like most people at the time, Bruce Lee was the inspiration for learning Martial Arts. Grandmaster Joe wasn’t interested in school, his passion was in Martial Arts and music (if you follow us on Instagram you would have seen Grandmaster Joe break off the cobwebs and play the drums with singer Cosima De Vito in January). In 1984 he decided to spread his love and JAI Martial Arts was established. Below is a quick timeline of where Grandmaster Joe started teaching:

1984: St Martins Church Hall in Kensington
1986: Pagewood Primary School
1987: PCYC Daceyville
1989: Matraville Cultural Hall
1992: Opened in Maroubra Junction on the corner of Anzac Parade and Maroubra Rd (where Fitness First is now before the major upgrade to the centre).
1996: University of New South Wales
2007: Reopened in Maroubra Junction where we currently are after the centre rebuild
* In between Grandmaster Joe was also teaching at many primary and high schools.

His passion for teaching Martial Arts has taken him all over the world, both as a student and as a coach. His students have represented Australia and NSW in Taekwondo, Kenpo Karate, Muay Thai and Kickboxing, giving them the opportunity to travel the world and represent their country and state. Together with his wife Elly and son Master Chris, they have created an extended family for all the students and families that train with us – both now and in the past.

As we celebrate our 38th Anniversary, we thank all of our students, their family, and our instructor team for trusting in our programs, our school, and becoming an extended part of our family.
