JAI takes on Karate

March 16, 2026

On Sunday 15th March, JAI sent 6 students to compete in the All Australia Karate Championship.

While Taekwondo and Karate often get treated as the same, the styles have many differences. Some changes that our Taekwondo students had to adjust to for this competition:

  • No protective equipment – head guard for under 18 and shin guards permitted.
  • Head kicks and Leg kicks allowed
  • Body Punching and Knee Strikes to the body encouraged

Despite these different rule sets, it was great to see our students step onto the mats to take on the Karate students. From left to right on the above picture:

Raditya: Gold
Tyler: Gold
Jay: Lost against a strong opponent
Julian: Bronze
Joseph: Lost against a strong opponent
Olivia: Silver

Grandmaster Joe and the entire JAI Community are incredibly proud of our students for participating. Not only was it their first time in a Karate Tournament, they did so entering in the Black Belt division. For most of our students, this was their first time competing against students other than their JAI teammates. Well done to you all.
