Term 1 Weekly Focus Topics

Events
February 3, 2025

Check back each week to see the Weekly Focus Topic we’ll be exploring with students in our Kicking Dragons and Taekwondo programs.

The Weekly Focus Topic will be a class activity completed towards the end of the lesson. These Topics will introduce students to new training principals, styles and scenarios designed to enhance their skill, confidence and Martial Arts knowledge.

Check back each week for updates:

Weekly Class Focus:
Week 1 – Back on the mats
Let’s get the kids moving, and back to structure and routine. Classes will conclude with some mini game/activity to celebrate the return to Term.
Week 2 – Agility
Something very important for all physical activity – especially Martial Arts. As a ‘stand up striking’ style, the focus for the week will be developing speed and strength in the legs. Classes will conclude with a jumping drill designed to get students jumping to a slightly elevated pad, and then back on the mats as fast as they can for a period of time. This will be partnered with speed kicking. Expect some very tired kids towards the end of class!
Week 3 – Power
A favourite for many kids! This week we will continue to focus on powerful strikes (Push Kicks, Back Kicks, and more). There will be opportunities for board breaking and knocking down mini punch bags. We’ll also discuss with the students the difference between ‘inside power’ and ‘outside power’.
Week 4 – Syllabus
Now that we’ve had a few weeks of training under our belt, students will spend some time this week learning their new Syllabus. This is a great opportunity for students to learn new skills, train their brain, and work towards achieving their goal.
Week 5 – Self Defence
Mr Miyagi said it best, “best block, no be there”. The best way to handle confrontations is to walk away, or to recognise if a situation or environment is unsafe and leave. But sometimes it’s unavoidable. This is just one of the reasons why we choose to enrol our kids in Martial Arts programs – it’s always better to know it and not need it, then need it and not know it. This week students will participate in various grab style self defence situations. We will also continue practicing the Grading Syllabus.
Week 6 – Weapons
One of our most popular Weekly Themes is Weapons Week. It’s an opportunity for students to level up their skills and learn some basics of other Martial Arts. This week we’ll be focusing on the Filipino Martial Art Kali. Students will participate in single and double stick drills, our older students will work on defensive applications with their partner.
Week 7 – Grading Prep
This week students will continue to get into their Grading Syllabus. Eligible students will receive their Grading notice at the end of class. We will also ramp up the activity on the mats as students participate in some added fitness drills.
Week 8 – Grading Prep + Punch Tag
Last week to practice before Grading Week kicks off. Students will also have the opportunity to improve their skill and confidence with our Punch Tag activity.
Week 9 – Grading Week
Good luck to everyone who is Grading this week. For students not Grading, we’ll have a variety of activities planned for you.
Week 10 – Games Week
Time to celebrate a great Term of Training!
